PERFECT SURFACE, RESTLESS WORLD: Superflat and Its Contemporary Echoes
CURATORIAL TEXT
Perfect Surface, Restless World: Superflat and Its Contemporary Echoes explores the legacy of Superflat through the works of Takashi Murakami, Mr., Da Man and Azusa Nozawa. Bringing together key figures and younger voices in Japanese contemporary art, the exhibition considers how manga, anime and consumer culture continue to shape artistic expression.
Murakami’s expansive visual universe and Mr.’s intimate explorations of desire and escapism enter into dialogue with Da Man’s imaginary worlds and Nozawa’s emotionally charged figures. Rather than proposing a fixed lineage, the exhibition traces shared ideas as they evolve into distinct artistic languages.
Beneath vivid colours and apparently innocent imagery emerge questions of identity, vulnerability and consumption. The surface may appear perfect, yet the worlds it contains remain restless.
